Memories are Made of This

If history is indeed just biography, as suggested by Ralph Waldo Emerson, it is the memories passed down through the generations that bring it to life.

The name Ed Wadley is well known to many Cedar Keyans. Born in 1915, the fourth of seven children to Edward and Nena Wadley, he spent his childhood years exploring and observing the unique environment that surrounded him here in Cedar Key.

In 2005, Wadley decided to record his memories of those days, by sketching and painting scenes recalled from the Cedar Key of the 1920-1935 period, when he was a young man. He accomplished this although legally blind and unable to tell when the pencil was touching the paper. The results of these efforts are in a charming and delightful book Cedar Key - Long Ago currently available at the Cedar Key Historical Society museum.

With assistance from his grand- daughter Madeline Wadley, Wadley has succeeded in telling the story of a bygone Cedar Key, giving meaning to and preserving a part of its history, reflecting a quieter and idyllic time.

Cedar Key - Long Ago will appeal not only to those who grew up on these shores, but also to visitors and new residents who have made it their home. Wadley has generously given the rights of publication to the Historical Society, ensuring a legacy that will continue in the years ahead.

Wadley's career for 36 years was with the Southern Bell Telephone Company. During the Second World War, he served his country in the Army Signal Corps. His talents, aside from painting, include photography and music. He plays the violin and the harmonica. Now in his 92nd year, Ed Wadley resides in Nashville, Tennessee near his family.

Note: Mr. Wadley passed away on June 8, 2007

The book costs $25.00 + 7% sales tax (Fl. Residents only) + $6.95 shipping and handling.
